This is a short clip from an intense thunderstorm, recorded from my second story queens apartment from an open bathroom window during the early afternoon of july 15, 2015. Some traffic and airplanes can be heard in the background. This clip was recorded using an apple iphone 6 and the zoom iq6 x/y stereo microphone with a rode dead kitten windscreen at low volume, normalized later. This recording lasts until the battery on my iphone hit 5%, at which point the zoom handy recorder app automatically stopped.

A recording i made in may of 2013 as i was trying to get a good recording of the wonderful wood thrush recorded. You can still faintly hear the wood thrush in the background, but the nice surprise on this recording is the very clear, bubbling, trilling call of a proud little chipping sparrow. This recording was carefully made using my homemade parabolic reflector microphone. (*using my trusty rode ntg-2), and going into my handy zoom h4n recorder. I wanted to get as accurate a recording as possible so i bumped up the bit rate to 96 kpbs. I know it makes for a larger file, but i think it is worth it.

A peaceful, quiet soundscape recorded in the midwest during covid-19. This includes the nice, soft, gentle song of crickets during the midday. Plus, about halfway through, one of my favorite sounds--even though it is man-made, that of a propeller airplane droning on through the bright, breezy saturday. Recording made on saturday may 9th, 2020 at 3pm in the afternoon. It was made in short grass just off of an asphalt trail, running through a beautiful woods at a very popular state park in illinois. Because of the covid-19 shutdown, the background noise of cars was almost nonexistent. It's a recording of a calcium-sandoz® forte/fuerte 500 mg effervescent tabled falling into a glass of water and dissolving. You can hear the tablet dropping into the water and water droplet hitting water surface back. After w while - co2 buubles start to appear creating noisy sound. The recording has a long natural fadeout and unfortunately some background noise. I leaved "silence" before the sound starts so you can de-noise the recording to your needs (i prefer audacity for denoisig). Recorded inside of my wardrobe for acoustic isolation using zoom h2 on a mic-stand. Recoded as 96khz/24-bit wav. Normalized, truncated and convertet do 16-bit flac using audacity. I've converted this to 16-bit as it still has plenty of noise and 24-bits would not be any better after normalization.

Recording of parakeets being loud in springfield park in easy london at 7:30am in november. This was an unintentional recording as i was testing out some new gear, this meant that i wasn't able to unclip the mics from my rucksack straps and avoid picking up the rustle of my clothes and some breathing. A train and canal boat engines can be heard in the background. This recording was made using a sound devices mixpre6ii and a stereo pair of fel em172 mics. Low cut on the sd which in basic mode is 80hz (i think). There is no processing to this recording other than to ‘normalize’ the levels. I do not require any credit or attribution. A late summer soundscape that is a favorite of mine. . Microphones set up in some mature woods about 60 feet from a large lake on labor day weekend. Most of the background is the insects, which are very obvious during this time of year. The swelling of their volume is nap-inducing (*at least to me in my opinion. )here is the midwest this swelling and subsiding of the insect wave tells me that summer is just about starting to go back downhill, after a feverish peak. Despite the covid-19 of the year, nature does not seem to have changed her soundscape. Life goes on in the forests. The birds, whose job of raising young is over, are still there. . . They're just resting and relaxing and listening to the insects as well i'm sure. Now of course you will hear a few prominent birds in this captured moment:(1) a great blue heron squawks out starting at 1:17 into this piece. (2) the alarm call of a red-headed woodpecker can be heard at 2:14. Other than that, just the insects singing their hearts out and the assortment of birds taking secondary place during this time of year. This was recorded on sunday september 6th 2020 at 8:30 in the morning in the forest in southern illinois. Equipment: zoom f4, microphone: sennheiser mkh 8060. A peaceful, droning, relaxing summer soundscape of the midwestern forest. For starters, in the background you hear a river of wind steadily swirling around the oaks, and the maples and the sycamore trees. A blessed northeast wind-friend. The insects take over, and on top of that, a single, solitary bird, i think a flycatcher, softly calls his one-note. Even though this is the time of year that the visitors, those beautiful neo-tropical migrants, fill the woods, after several months of raising of raising a family, they are quiet, resting now. . . Letting the insects signify the passage of time and the slow march to autumn. In about 6 weeks from now, most of our visitors will have left. . . Back down south, their job of raising the next crop of insect-eaters done. . . And the woods, the forest, the nearly-dry creekbed will be packing it in. This sound was recorded via the use of a behringer b2 microphone, fostex fr2 and a home made parabolic reflector made from a tv satellite dish. The source of the sound was between 100m-200m away from the microphone. This has been eq'ed with high-end shelving to reduce gain noise, low-end shelved up to 1khz (to reduce wind and background noise) and the overall gain has been increased. By purchasing it in 1921, it has been protected for 100 years and we can still enjoy this brabant sahara today. You can roam freely on the sand plain. So there is plenty of room to explore extensively. Marvel at the submerged trees, enjoy the chirping field crickets and quench your thirst at one of the many cafes or restaurants on the edge of this nature reserve. Walking, cycling or on horseback: it's all possible here. With the wind in your hair and the sand in your shoes. You may even come across the sheep herd. The sheep keep the heath short and eat away saplings. This is how they keep the area open. The loonse en drunense duinen still has 270 hectares of shifting sand. A peaceful ambiance of some pine trees in early, early spring. The predominant, lower-pitched background is the strong south wind blowing through the tops of healthy pine trees. . . An unwavering "swooshing" that cuddles and curls around the flexible, thick-resin-filled pine needles. Also, from time to time, you hear the sound of the wind rattling some dead and brown oak leaves; oak leaves which are still stubbornly hanging on to their parent tree. I purposely did only a very bare minimum of post-processing on this sound so as to keep it as realistic as possible. Yes, there are quite a few wind rumbles that i toned down just a little bit. I did not totally get rid of the wind rumbles. I did this on purpose so you the true feeling of " being there " on that mild, but still raw cold day of spring could still be felt. At 4:35 into the soundscape the trilling of a pine warbler is heard---a warble of warm-sounding notes fighting back stubborn winter. At 9:33 that hardy year-round resident, black-capped chickadee starts tweeting about. Recording made on saturday march 25, 2023 using a sound devices mixpre-3 series ii and only one microphone. This locality has a patch of secondary vegetation mixed with eucalyptus plantations and very close to a main road. 88 piano keys, long natural reverb: up to 13 seconds per note. This is me giving back. I love freesound. You guys saved my bacon back in the day. Recently i searched for free piano notes for a game i'm making, but the only ones i could find ended too quickly. I need long reverb! luckily i have an old piano, so i made my own. So this is me giving back. This is an old piano!!!. We had the piano tuned a year ago, but it is well over 60 years old, so be warned! these notes have character! if you want perfect tone, either edit them individually, generate something artificially, or buy a professional set. But if you want a piano with personality, this is for you. Being an old piano, it only has 85 keys. So i created the highest 3 notes by speeding up previous notes, to make the modern standard 88 keys. How the notes were created. The notes are created on an old (well over 50 years) steinhoff upright piano. It only has 85 keys, so i faked the highest 3 keys by taking previous keys and changing their pitch. I opened the top, balanced my trusty everesta bm-800 condenser microphone across the top near the high note end, and held down the "loud" pedal. Each note was then hit and kept pressed down until i could no longer hear any reverb. Notes were saved as mp3 using my laptop, using free sound recorder on the highest quality settings. Yeah, i know it isn't flac, but i am strictly amateur with budget to match, and that was the best i could do. After that, all editing was of course uncomopressed until the final save. How the notes were edited. Editing was kept to a minimum, mainly to enhance the reverberation. All editing took place on audacity on linux mint. First i cropped any silence from the start. Next, used the envelope function to gradually increae volume to 200% over a couple of seconds. That is, the quietest part of the reverb is twice as loud as you might expect. Because for my game i sometimes need a single piano key to last ten seconds. Next i maximised the volume. If there was just a single stray waveform that stuck out then i reduced that by 2db or so then maximised again. Because like i said, i want to hear that reverb! i then found the part where background noise starts to be noticeable, and faded out over 1 second or so. This meant that the lowest notes had as much as 13 seconds of reverb, whereas the highest notes might only have 2 or so. Finally i checked the result, and edited three or four notes that i felt were just too ugly (badly tuned, or for some reason the software suddenly got hissy when the note became too quiet. Weird. ) i also slightly changed the pitch of a couple of notes that were slightly out of tune but otherwise ok. No doubt a better ear than mine could teak all of the notes. But as i said, it's an old piano and we're keeping it real. Finally, files were compressed to ogg at the highest quality setting, using soundkonverter. Why not flac?.
